BYOD devices could cause data networking problems

According to an October report from ISACA – a nonprofit IT consulting group – around 65 percent of all employees plan on using a work-supplied computer to conduct holiday shopping this year. An additional 39 percent said they would conduct these transactions a laptop they primary use for their job, and another 2 percent said they would use a tablet device owned by their employer.

While this kind of shopping may be easier for employees who want to make use of their lunch breaks to find great deals on items, it could cause problems for a business’ IT professionals. Due to the fact that the devices often make use of company internet, experts suggest that proper precautions must be taken so that employees don’t compromise the network and leave it susceptible to hackers.

“We want to ensure the BYOD trend works in a secure manner and that workers are following processes that the organization has put in place,” Rob Stroud, a former international vice president for ISACA, told ComputerWorld in an interview.

However, there are steps that businesses can take to mitigate their risk for a serious data loss. For example, business owners may want to have their IT professionals go over safe practices with all of their employees, such as establishing safe passwords, updating their virus protection software frequently and avoiding suspicious emails that could be phishing scams.

These methods may seem simple, but even businesses with high-tech VoIP telephony services that allow for cloud computing solutions need to take tried-and-true precautions to ensure that these services are allowing maximum productivity during the busy holiday season.

To learn how to better protect or upgrade these networks, businesses may also want to pursue consulting services from a trusted VoIP provider that has experience crafting data networking solutions for companies.
