Chicago lays out plan to become most connected city in the world

With more devices like the recently released iPhone 5 hitting the streets, people are starting to look for wireless internet in more locations. The leadership of the city of Chicago has officially unveiled a new two-pronged plan to position for the digital age.

Rumored for some time, the plan – dubbed the “broadband challenge” – is seeking partners to help provide low-cost, gigabit-speed internet to 15 up and coming business zones. Many of these are academic in nature and outside of the Loop – one of the cities community areas. The plan will also bring free Wi-Fi to every park in Chicago.

“Chicago will be one of the most connected cities in the world,” Mayor Rahm Mr. Emanuel said in a statement. “The establishment of a world-class broadband network in Chicago will create thousands of jobs and dramatically improve educational opportunities, economic development, health career services and general quality of life.”

While the plan sounds great, as Crain’s Chicago Business reports, is it still a mere pipe dream as there is no certainty that it will be funded and officials have yet to make a financial commitment. The city already has top-caliber broadband services at reasonable rates in the main business districts and it is the startup companies in the surrounding neighborhoods and cheaper rents that are not able to take advantage of the existing infrastructure.

To remedy this, Emanuel has challenged the private sector to present a solution. Once ideas start to come in, the city will follow the traditional bidding process to determine a course of action.

For businesses in the Chicago area, things are about to get interesting. However, in a strengthened city infrastructure, companies need to ensure their own networks are able to handle it to truly take advantage of the new setup.
