Deploying cloud technology to make disaster recovery more cost effective and convenient

In tenuous economic times, oftentimes business continuity issues that should be at the forefront of the C-level suite agenda are casually swept aside for issues of immediate relevance. For example, although a natural disaster such as a wildfire, tornado, flood or hurricane could inflict irreparable damage on a business operation, Forrester Research reports that a mere 6 percent of overall IT budgets are set aside to deal with issues related to disaster recovery.

Consequently, disaster preparedness was historically overlooked by many enterprises that considered large investments in alternative hardware to be deployed in the unlikely event that a primary network experiences an outage to be a wasteful expenditure.

However, with advances in cloud computing and unified communications platforms, this “what if” expense can be successfully integrated into an existing data management system at a much more reasonable cost.

According to a recent article written by veteran IT journalist Robert L. Scheier for Computer World, “More and more IT shops are using technologies like virtualization and replication to make disaster recovery just another service, sometimes using the same servers, network, and storage that run order entry, email, application development, or other services. This merges what historically were disaster recovery and business continuity efforts, protecting the business against not only rare disasters, but also human error or equipment failures.”

Consequently, rather than having a backup data management system collecting dust in house, waiting for a severe weather event to strike, virtualized hardware systems in the cloud are able to shift processing abilities from a damaged server to one being used to undertake less crucial tasks. This provides cost savings as the alternative, cloud-based server need not be so sophisticated as they can operate on limited capacity until the primary server is functional again.

For enterprises in Chicago interested in the cost and convenience benefits afforded through cloud-based disaster recovery technology, it would be wise for officials to partner with a Chicago managed IT service that can provide cloud computing solutions.
