Unified communications, BYOT to shape the workplace of tomorrow

According to a recently released study by research firm CoreNet Global, over the next 10 years, the look of the American workplace will radically shift as bring your own technology (BYOT) advances, unified communications and other new technologies enable more workers to complete their designated tasks without relying on a physical space or communal resources provided by the company.

The report, which was officially titled “Corporate Real Estate 2020,” found that new concepts such as nanotechnology, biometric security, VoIP business phones and sensor-driven smart phones will create an environment where companies can be less dependent on shared technology or physical buildings.

Researchers suggest the office spaces of 2020 will be smaller, and that on the whole, open, more collaborative environments will replace the cubicle structure that has pervaded in many industries over the last few decades. Cloud computing will also doubtless play a role, as it can currently give a business’ employees the ability to access essential work documents while on-the-go or from the comfort of home.

“BYOT is happening now,” Keith Perske, of E-Business Strategies, a business technology consulting firm, said in a statement. “Corporations cannot keep up with personal technology, so the next step is already happening.”

As a result, businesses may want to prepare by investing in the preliminary resources that could allow for smoother transitions down the road. By putting less of an emphasis on their office space now, forward-thinking companies can begin conserving resources while attracting top talent with a cutting-edge working environment that provides for more flexibility.

As such, speaking to a provider of cloud computing solutions with years of experience in the VoIP business may be beneficial, as they can facilitate the necessary hardware and software updates for this transition.
