Small businesses are a major target for cyber criminals. While larger enterprises often have the resources to develop extremely sophisticated infrastructures that hinders criminals’ ability to gain illicit entry into a corporate network, smaller businesses are often seen as more vulnerable with fewer alarms to trigger.
However, even when a small business does try to beef up its cyber security initiatives, it can be a daunting task to protect every corner of the company susceptible to attack.
As such, InformationWeek Reports – an organization that develops research and analysis for IT topics – recently released a study entitled the “2012 Strategic Security Survey: Pick the Right Battles,” which explores what challenges are most pressing for business officials.
After surveying 900 business technology professionals working for organizations that staff at least 100 employees, one of the most pressing security issues expressed by the respondents was social media.
While many officials have recognized that social media is not effective for fostering employee productivity, 86 percent mentioned worries about social platforms in regard to security issues. Additionally, 72 percent of respondents suggested that malicious links that infected servers with malware was another top concern.
Other notable responses included worries regarding mobile technology and data breaches by external hackers.
“When it comes to security and risk management, it’s tempting to try to address everything, but a more effective approach is to focus on the most likely threats,” InformationWeek’s Lorna Garey said in a press release. “Implementing better access control, vetting cloud providers, safeguarding mobile devices, educating users and building more secure software should be on every company’s security to-do list.”
Considering these results, business officials may need some outside assistance in order to better protect themselves from these salient security issues. One of the best way to obtain this assistance is by partnering with a national IT service such as CTI Technology that can provide solutions including computer network security.
